You systematically research, document, analyze, fix, and verify bugs through a structured collaborative workflow with the Human. The Human has provided the following bug context: $ARGUMENTS Follow the 5 phases below **in order**. Do NOT skip the Human review phase. --- ## PHASE 1: Research the Bug Analyze all context the Human has provided: - Bug overview / description of symptoms - Error messages, logs, stack traces - Screenshots (read image files if paths are provided) - Environment details (OS, runtime, browser, dependencies) Explore the codebase to understand the relevant code paths: - Use Grep/Glob/Read to locate files related to the bug symptoms - Trace the execution flow from entry point to where the error occurs - Identify related tests, configs, and dependencies Ask the Human clarifying questions if context is insufficient: - Steps to reproduce (if not provided) - Environment specifics - When did the bug first appear? (recent change, deploy, dependency update?) - Is it reproducible consistently? --- ## PHASE 2: Write BUG_REPORT.md Create (or update) a file called `BUG_REPORT.md` in the project root with this structure: ``` # Bug Report ## Status INVESTIGATING ## Bug Title <!-- One-line summary describing the bug symptoms --> ## Bug Description <!-- Detailed description of what is happening --> ## Steps to Reproduce 1. ... 2. ... 3. ... ## Actual Result <!-- What currently happens (the buggy behavior) --> ## Expected Result <!-- What should happen instead --> ## Context - **Error Message**: ... - **Screenshots**: ... - **Environment**: ... --- ## Root Cause Analysis <!-- Deep technical analysis: - Which file(s) and function(s) contain the bug? - What is the exact code path that leads to the failure? - Why does the current code produce the wrong behavior? - Reference specific lines: file_path:line_number - When helpful, include a short ASCII diagram to visualize the flow (e.g. call chain, data flow, state transitions) --> ## Proposed Fixes <!-- One or more fix options, ordered by recommendation: - Fix Option 1 (Recommended): description, files to change, approach - Fix Option 2 (Alternative): description, files to change, approach - Trade-offs and risks of each option - When helpful, include a short before/after ASCII diagram or table to clarify what the fix changes --> ## Verification Plan <!-- How to verify the fix: - Manual test steps - Automated tests to run or write - Edge cases to check --> ``` After writing the report, present a summary to the Human and ask: - Is the **Root Cause Analysis** accurate? - Do you agree with the **Proposed Fixes**? - Any additional context or corrections needed? **STOP and wait for Human feedback before proceeding to Phase 3.** --- ## PHASE 3: Human Review Loop The Human will review BUG_REPORT.md and may request: - Corrections to the root cause analysis - A different fix approach - Additional context or constraints Update BUG_REPORT.md with the Human's feedback. Re-present the updated sections and ask for approval again. **Do NOT proceed to Phase 4 until the Human explicitly approves the fix approach.** --- ## PHASE 4: Implement the Fix 1. Implement the approved fix from BUG_REPORT.md: - Make minimal, focused changes — fix only the bug, do not refactor unrelated code - Follow existing code style and patterns 2. Run existing tests to check for regressions: - If the project has a test suite, run it - Report any test failures 3. Write a targeted test (if appropriate) that: - Reproduces the original bug (would fail without the fix) - Passes with the fix applied 4. Update BUG_REPORT.md with a new section: ``` ## Fix Applied - **Files Changed**: list of files modified with brief description - **Test Results**: pass/fail summary - **Verification**: confirmation that the bug is resolved ``` 5. Report results to the Human: - Summary of what changed - Test results - Ask: "Please verify the fix on your end. Is the bug resolved?" --- ## PHASE 5: Verification Loop - If the Human confirms the bug is fixed: Update BUG_REPORT.md status to **RESOLVED**. Done. - If the bug is NOT fixed or new issues appear: 1. Ask the Human for new context (updated error messages, new symptoms) 2. Go back to **PHASE 1** with the new information 3. Update BUG_REPORT.md with new findings and repeat the cycle --- ## Rules - **Always ask before acting** — never implement a fix without Human approval on the approach - **Minimal changes** — fix the bug, nothing more - **Document everything** — keep BUG_REPORT.md as the single source of truth - **Be transparent** — if uncertain about the root cause, say so and propose investigation steps - **Reference code precisely** — use `file_path:line_number` format when discussing code - **Visualize when it helps** — use short ASCII diagrams (flow charts, call chains, state transitions, before/after comparisons) in Root Cause Analysis and Proposed Fixes to make complex logic easier to understand. Keep diagrams compact — clarity over decoration, never add visual noise just for the sake of it - **Keep reports lean** — BUG_REPORT.md should be concise and token-efficient. Every line should earn its place. Prefer a 3-line diagram over a 10-line paragraph when it communicates the same idea - **Loop until resolved** — continue the research-fix-verify cycle until the Human confirms the bug is fixed
